I wrote this poem on the last day of school, before summer vacation.

She’s doing the dance I taught her
Hard to connect with all year
She doesn’t know I can see
In the distance, in another class
Yet I call her name
A thumbs up I give
I receive one in return
Heart swelling
A parent stopped me today
Had to tell me what I did for her student
Hated all things physical when we met
Now plays basketball and is interested in so much more
Wet eyes for both
The hugs and tears of these bright eyed kids
Their whole lives ahead of them
But in this moment
There is only now and how much you matter
Smiling from ear to ear
Co-worker love ended the day
A celebration and acknowledgement
Amazing work we do
If there was any doubt
There is now only affirmation
Of our life path
Doing what we came here to do
The way of the teacher
