Do you remember life before the internet?
The Good ole days!
I know when I was growing up, we spent every moment we could playing outside.
In the summer and after school, we played kick the can, kickball, hide and seek and organized a talent show for the neighborhood parents. We made forts in the fields, biked, swam, jammed to music from the record stereo and brought our matchbox cars outside, driving them through the jungle of grass. We made tents out of sheets and slept outside until the pincher bugs scared us inside. In the winter, sledding and ice skating were where it was at.
If we called someone and it rang and rang we knew they weren’t home. If it made that annoying buzzing sound we knew someone in the home was busy talking to someone else.
We dealt with it, it’s all we knew.
When at school we had to cover our books with paper bags, use encyclopedias, dictionaries and go to the library. Those term papers could only be done with the help of the library and meeting up with friends was an added bonus.
If driving, we had to write down directions given to us and figure it out. The map came in handy! We messed up, made U-turns but made it eventually to our destination.
We went door to door selling cookies or stickers to promote our cause while parents were busy with their adult lives. Lemonade stands were created together with our neighborhood friends.
As an adult, the Internet changed my life. It was magic connecting to others from all over the world. I raced home to my new computer and stumbled into chat forums. What an amazing new discovery and I was hooked.
I met my husband in 1995, through the Internet, and a whole new world opened up.
I won’t go into the pros and cons of the Internet but wish to add just a few things:
– Let’s not become complacent and believe everything we see/hear. Study history and study facts.
– Make some time every day to connect with nature, sit in silence and be present.
– Connect to our heart daily.
Sure, I remember life before the Internet, the good ole days.
